Lesson 3 – Applying a coloured ground – Video

Coloured ground

Tutor | Will Kemp
Level | Beginner
Length | 6.08 Minutes

In this video I demonstrate mixing a coloured ground with burnt umber & white.
Student quality paint is fine for this because you will be covering over most of it.

Trouble shooting
If you have trouble with the paint forming pools or blobs on the surface the mix will be too watery. To achieve a smooth staining effect you will have to mix a medium into the paint mixture to allow it to soak into the paint fibres.

Acrylic Flow release – just add a touch to the paint mixture and it will soak into the canvas easier

I like this lesson. For a beginner in acrylics it is very helpful. adding a little bit of water in a mixture helped to apply the paint very easy. And the result is great- a nice smooth surface, ready for painting.

It really is amazing how effective a coloured ground can be in your paintings.
      Glad you enjoyed the lesson.

Hwllo. There“s no need to add Gesso before color?

What size canvas did you use for this?
