The still life course has been designed in chronological order so that it follows my process in creating the painting. All lessons are streamed online so you can watch them as many times as you want, wherever you have an internet connection.
The different videos have different levels attached to them. Some of the intermediate techniques might be harder to get to grips with to start with.
You can download the videos to your computer so it makes it easier if you paint away from an internet connection. (If you scroll to the bottom of this page you will see a ‘Video downloads box’ with zip files & instructions)
1. Coloured ground
2. Contrast
3. Composition
4. Colour mixing
5. Perspective
6. Negative shapes
7. Glazing
I touch on each of the principles throughout the painting process. The techniques we look at are easily transferred to future still life paintings.
I go through colour mixes at different stages of the painting but some of these might take you longer to get the perfect match.
Step 1. Download the image below.
There are 2 versions, one has grid lines marked out if you prefer to grid out your canvas for the drawing. Please note if your canvas you’re working on is bigger, just be aware that upscaling the grid to fit your canvas will result in a larger than life lemon, jug etc..
The canvas size I use in the painting is 40 x 30 cm
This is not in exact scale relationship to the A4 printout (I’ve added a bit more background) Because it has been designed so the printout image is available to everyone with an A4 printer.
