Lesson 11 – Bringing objects to a finish
Lesson 11 – The Jug – Video

The Jug

Tutor | Will Kemp
Level | Intermediate
Time | 7.03min

Step 1. Adjusting the drawing
Half closing your eyes as you look at the image helps to simplify the shapes and correct the drawing.

Step 2. Turning the form (1.35min)
Softening the edges of the jug using a thin veil of paint with added glazing liquid. This helps to create a diffused look.

Step 3. Adding the highlights (5.50min)
The highlights often look the most impressive yet are in fact one of the easiest parts of the painting process. The trick is to make sure you underlying form and drawing looks correct before you put them on.

    Afternoon Will,

I have just completed the course, having not picked up a brush for over 30 years. I would like to say how much I have enjoyed it, and how pleased I am with my first effort. Your tutorials are packed with advice and information, which is straightforward and produced in easy to digest portions!

I have only used oil and watercolour in the past.and decided, on retirement, to give acrylics a try. I think they are great and so versatile. I am not very good with computers so I don’t think I will be able to send you a copy of the finished article, but I will try to send a photo in due course.

Thanks for reigniting my enthusiasm through this excellent course.

    With kind regards,
    Peter

Hi Will: I notice that you sometimes do a ‘scrubbing’ technique with your brush. I do this also but I notice that it disfigures the bristles so that they don’t come to a lovely sharp edge anymore.
What am I doing wrong — or– does this happen to your brushes also?? Thanks, Sarah
(gosh I hope at SOME point I become more sure of my brush strokes like you…..)
